I have been trying to convert the rom, which is in .bin format, to .SMD using a few different apps, but it seems to corrupt the header making it unusable.
Using ucon64 converting .bin to .smd I get this. (If anyone has any ideas please let me know) I really wanted to play this rom on the real hardware.

I also tried header fixing with no luck. The original rom is version 3.0 btw (Sonic 1 Megamix_v3.0)

The ROM's header info IS bad. You need to correct it. Use a hex editor, and change at $1A4 the sequence of bytes that says 00139497 to 001FFFFF.
Next, pad the file until it is exactly 2 megabytes. Then try to convert it to SMD. It should work fine after that. If you can't do that I can throw the converted file up on a free file hosting thing. |

Thanks for the info. I know how to hex edit, but padding to exactly 2MB I have no clue on If it's not a big deal for you to upload the converted SMD, padded file I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,

What do you need SMD format for? Ucon64 writes bin to carts, not SMD. I'm always converting FROM SMD, not TO it. |

I have a Super Magic Drive copier (16Mbit) and a friend of mine just made a floppy drive add-on for me. I know it's a bit old fashioned to load games off of a floppy, but I like to. I figure when I finally do get an old motherboard or laptop with a parallel port, the roms should be in .SMD format anyway. I know some loaders will convert on the fly, but why convert when you have the "correct" format to start with? _________________ www.videogameobsession.com |

got pics on this or maybe how to make one of your own? I have an SMD that needs a floppy drive. |

The only problem I have now is that 2MB won't fit on a 1.44Mb floppy
is there anyway to just convert it to smd without padding to 2MB?
Thanks _________________ www.videogameobsession.com |

You need to use ucon64 with -s to split the ROM into smaller parts and then you just pick the first file and it should let you load each one so that with 2 disks you can load the full ROM. And with that you'll be able to play 2MByte games on there. |

ok, I can do that.
So, is it the SMD format that requires full 512KB chunks? I was hoping since it was under 1.3MB to start that it could be padded, converted, then trimmed back to fit on a single disk... but it's really not that big of a deal when I think about it. I'm am a bit OCD, so I sometimes get picky. _________________ www.videogameobsession.com |

Spoonman has been asking how to split ROM files since the mid 90s! |

Actually, that is the one thing I've never asked how to do. I have splitting and joining roms since '92. I joined, cracked, intro-removed, and converted to .smc on over 700 snes roms. Then I sold SNESDisc, the first commercially available CD full of snes roms, months before Number's collections.
What I don't know how to do is trim a rom that has been padded back to it's original size. _________________ www.videogameobsession.com |

Anything past the original ROM size can be cut out in a hex editor if you like. The ROM was padded either with 00s or FFs I imagine. But really, just use two disks and enjoy it. |

Sorry for reviving such an old thread. I just bought a 16M SMD and want to play the game. but I'm having the same issue as the OP. The Megaupload posted file is now long gone too.
Does anyone one have a converted file?. Thanks for your help. |
