The Skunkboard II just came out which is a USB capable flash cart with 8mb of memory.

Anyone have one of these and know if it can load commercial ROMS on it. I'd ask in one of the forums, but since this is largely a development/homebrew tool, I know I wouldn't get any answers as far as loading commercial game ROMS on it.

*update*

It works with commercial games!

I don't know, how are the homebrew roms different than the commercial ones? If homebrew loads all the same as commercial in jaguar emulators then I guess it would too. But I'm not experienced with jaguar. All google could find was that it's not designed to play commercial roms but it may work.

In under 2 minutes of Google I was able to find the answer.

The answer is that you wont get an adaptor since they are available only in very very limited quantities. There is a waiting list wich is full already, no new entries are accepted at the moment.

I used search words like "Skunkboard commercial roms" but mostly found the old "we don't support loading commercial roms". You mind sharing what you found?

If you have yours already I suggest you just give the games a try. Couldn't hurt. And then you can let us know your results so anyone else that wants to know will find out here.

Yea I will do that. That's the whole reason I got one of those. I mean, I have an official Atari Flash cart that loads games, but it's a parallel port device and some games don't seem to work. The new Skunkboard is USB.

So you own one that you can test yourself, yet still asked us the question?

Well I don't think it's as simple as just loading up a ROM. It sure isn't like that with the Atari Flash cart that I have.

Yea, arb is a bit special when it comes to the way of his questioning, lol. But, well, once you got used to that, you'll find that basically he's a nice guy. Maybe you can compare it a bit to kyuusaku's way of answering questions. You can read each single word, still you might be unable to get the sense. Hehe (:

I have confirmed that yes, commercial ROMS (with the extension .jag) do in fact work on the skunkboard 2. I personally have a jaguar system with jaguar CD system atatched to that. The skunkboard 2 is compatible with jaguar CD, unlike skukboard 1.

The skunkboard 2 has 8mb of flash memory and has a mini USB connector (which is used to connect to a PC). You load files to it from a PC via a command line tool which is actually very easy to use. It also has two other full sized USB connectors, which could be for future USB peripherals like USB flash sticks.

One feature I really like about the skunkboard 2 is that though it has 8mb of memory, it has two banks of 4mb memory. So, you can load up to 4mb in one bank, and up to 4mb in the other. I personally have loaded wolfenstein 3d (2mb) in bank one, and doom (4mb) in bank two. When you turn off the jaguar system and turn it back on, the screen is green. Press up on the controller to load the file loaded in bank one, and press down on the controller to load the file loaded in bank 2.

Currently, Tursi, the guy that is with the group that makes the skunkboard 2 I believe is not taking any more orders on these.

This works much better than my official Atari Jaguar flash cart in that, it has usb (the atari flash cart uses usb), has more memory, two separate memory banks, and you can have two files on the same cart.

I haven't tested many ROMS, but I will test more and will test some homebrew as well. Protos and commercial games work fine so far. Only think the skunkboard 2 lacks is a case, but I think there are a couple of people working on making a case for this

Thx for the info.

BTW, have you started that website you were talking about a couple posts back? Is that your intended location for some of this compatibility testing results?

I am still considering it. I have so far had 100% success with this skunkboard 2 and commercial games.
