madman wrote: | I never realized people actually cared about this shit, but I have probably 4-5 hard drives in my closet chock full of original scene releases. Likely 100+ floppies at my parents house as well. The majority of the 16-bit scene releases were in LZH/LHA format with probably ARJ and ZIP being 2nd and 3rd in that order. Of course I may be confused and mixing things up with the N64 days when ZIP was more commonplace than the others. Looking now at some archives I have readily available, I still see LHA files being used even in the later half of the 90's. |
How much for the hard drives? |

yeah... lha x snk-kif or I guess if it had some hidden files inside and didn't have any lzh, then lha x /a snk-kif.lha or something like that blah... I hated having to use the lha utility only for snes LOL it didn't offer much benefit over pkzip. pkunzip *.zip is a lot simpler
well seems like the creator of pkzip did work on arc format so that may be why there was a little confusion as well. too bad the guy died as an alcoholic in his 30s. but I generally prefer rar and 7zip these days anyway. pkzip is just cliche and everyone knows it in business environments.
madman if you have a lot of snes original archives, there's many here who would like to acquire them. I stopped searching for original archives ages ago. everyone's sets are incomplete. I believe there are people who have massive quantities of them though. but it gets kind of vague when you are looking between 1991 and 1993.
Also it was rediculous how the console scene had to cling onto the crappy old 8+3 format when almost nobody was distributing on BBS any more. N64 and GBC should have started using long filenames. I haven't had any problem copying lfn between a windows box and a unix environment on the internet. 8+3 was confining and just showing that people try to grip onto old technology that will never ever come back. Nobody in their right mind uses a bbs to transfer games lol. 8+3 format seemed sloppy for the later Nintendo ROM archives to me from the very start. I remember iND would release on occasion with long file name and that would stick out like a sore thumb. I think Duz also went over the character limit once with a pokemon release for OS Anyhow it was also silly because, not that I know anything about Amiga, but a lot of people were still in love with the Amiga computer and the 8+3 format was originally from MS-DOS as far as I can tell. The whole thing is just silly. Renaming tools were mocked but at least they would write out the full name of the game in the file name lmao. I'd keep all the scene folder names and add Subport numbering to the beginning and if anyone would squack they could simply take windows commander or similar tool and truncate all the numbers from the beginning of the folder names and then bam, original ftp naming. _________________ -amptor |

I'll have to dig through the hard drives and see. I'm pretty sure I burned a bunch of SNES archives to a CD as well, though I'm not positive I have it anymore. It'd require some digging around. The floppies I have would still have all the original file names, but probably not the file_id.diz files. I have at least 100 of those disks. They are far from being a complete archive from the scene, though.
Either on CD or on HD I also have archives from original HK CDs. I had a friend in HK who would just put in random CDs into his drive and point an ftp server at them. It's only SNES/GB stuff though. |

I found a CD tonight that is some HK SFXXXX images that I converted to SMC years before I had a GDSF. It also contains some of the later SNES releases. Enjoy some blasts from the past.

It's just too bad that he didn't keep original scene archives of games
Just like what I did..I uncompressed everything and kept the original folder names and file_id and everything but deleted all the original *.lzh files.
Goodsnes includes all of the cracked and trained games. I helped cowering put them in the database by testing all of what I had. I think someone else helped him with schweino's stuff I'm not sure. There supposedly was a release of goodsnes labeled "goodsnes schweino edition" which was just an unofficial name. _________________ -amptor |

Thanks, never knew these archives were still online.
On one of the docs I've been answered a question that's been troubling me since I had my SWC the DISK->CART option.
Quote: | The latest con on the Wild Card is
an option on the menu that says disk to cartridge. This is in theory meant to
upload games from disk onto an SRAM cartridge in a similar method to the MGD2
this does not mean that you can make your own games cartridges. SRAM
cartridges are expensive, far more than the origional games even. In theory
this is a nice option on the Wild Card anyway, in practice it is more
bullshit. By their own admission Front Far East admit they have no SRAM
cartridge for this facility and will not have either, it is just too expensive
to produce. In fact if you disassemble the code you will see that the option
is not even a genuine one. It's just there on the menu for show! The point of
all this? Simple, another means of conning the public. Something Front Far
East seem to be old hands at. |

This was my assumption for many years that it would be expensive and that the menu option did nothing at all. Otherwise they would have released cartrdiges.
I also heard that at local flea markets one could purchase bootleg SNES carts. I've never seen any circulate in game stores nor craigslist far later on. It could be true still but I would guess they would be low megabit eprom carts that were completely assembled in a factory in China somewhere.
Thallium, I used to hear a rumor that Fairlight couriered warez via DAT cartridge back in the mid 90s to larger boards. But I talked to someone recently who claims this is false. who knows. It would be a quick and easy way to transfer hundreds of megs of data rather than relying on dual 16.8k modems or whatever nonsense the sceners wanted you to believe was fast back then lol. _________________ -amptor |

If someone would have backed up USS Enterprise onto tape that would be a fairly sound collection I guess. Although I don't know what date that BBS first went online. It had multiple telnet nodes before it went down but it would only be current up to a certain date. Oldskool was still releasing SNES after that board went down lol. _________________ -amptor |
