Other thread resurection.
Anyway, I've been wanting to upgrade my SWC to 32 Mbit, but it's also the Motorola version. If anyone has any advice, it would be much appreciated. Also, if anyone could sell me an updated BIOS (it's currently on 1.8C) and upgraded PAL/GAL/whatever chips, hit me up. I emailed FFE, but I think they might be out of business.

Edit: Just found this guy's blog where he managed to upgrade the SWC to 32 megabits. Apparently, it's the same mod as the Goldstar version.
http://notinmame.blogspot.com/2016/12/super-wild-card-ram-upgrade-part-2.html
Still, if anyone has those chips, I'll buy them.
Edit 2: NVM, I think I found a source.

I finally (after 20 years or more) did this upgrade to my SWC. The PEELs work that I had programmed a decade ago. I had to check and recheck the new RAM chips and make sure they were right as I was getting a random amount of RAM detected at first (sometimes 16, 24, 32 or 0 (!)). Once that was all corrected, it always says 32M now.

Another pain on mine was that U12 was not socketed, so I had to desolder and pull the old PEEL, and install a socket. The traces and eyes on these boards are very, very fragile, and I had to patch it a little.

I also tried to upgrade from 2.7cc to 2.8cc. It works, but playing in memory mode does not- it just jumps back to the main menu. That same mode works in 2.7cc so I just left it... Odd. Does anyone else have an older Motorola board with 2.8cc and memory mode working? Mine is OLD- it still says "Super Magicom Plus" on the board and has no CIC chip capability...

UPDATE: There are two versions of the SWC 2.8cc BIOS. I found another later one marked 6-28-94. Once I removed the garbage data (it was dumped as a 27512 instead of 27128) it works fine, memory mode and all.

I decided to temporarily bump the SWC up to 24 mbit while I wait for my PEEL chips to arrive. However, it only gives me a black screen now (it works fine when the RAM board is removed, but obviously there isn't much point in using it). The RAM chips don't get hot or anything. I'm on BIOS 1.8, so maybe you need a newer one to go up to 24 megabits? Here's a picture of my solder work (the brown stuff is flux, I didn't burn the board or something)

Solder wise, everything's making contact and I don't see any shorts. If anyone has any suggestions on what to do to make it work or how to remove the flux, let me know.

Double check there are no shorts or opens on the RAM. I guess it's possible something is burned.

NOTE: Mine worked fine as a 16M unit on the old PEELs with all RAM spaces filled, but I don't remember if I had already upgraded to 2.7cc first. I *think* it still worked with my old 1.6cc.

BTW, I still have a few sets of these PEELs. They are now tested and working to upgrade SWC to 32M successfully. The mod is easy on both boards if you have moderate soldering skills and good eyes.

Would like a set, will PM Very Happy

Have an old Wellon programmer which whilst having never let me down before, unfortunately won't do either the original PEEL's or the replacement GAL18's. Tried converting to GAL16V8 but the conversion fails

I just tried to chop up the over-dumped file, got a file of CRC 6e14fce2, does that match your file? thanks

For those with low-end programmers unable to program the PEEL or GAL18V10 chips, i've succeeded in converting the files to the more common GAL16V8 chip Cool
Tested and working with GAL16V8D and PALCE16V8H.
Files attached...
Enjoy Laughing

Hi all..

Just a small update while I await parts from the China!

Corrosion from the leaky battery had eaten away at some vias, so I had to repair with some wires on the rear of the board, then fitted a socket ready for the new GALs.

I have replaced the floppy drive with a Gotek drive which is much better.

Out of interest I populated the empty ram spaces on the main board to see if it would see the extra 16mb and for anyone reading this thinking of carrying out the same experiment, it doesn’t work! Only 32mb recognised.

Dave.

Nice! Interesting about the onboard ram, it might be a jumper configuration or something easy to trace.
