I thought I'd share this one for a funny little twist.
So I picked up this old school pirate GB Zelda cart.
It's got a 27C400 OTP for ROM, a PEEL for mapping and a MB8464 for SRAM.

It didn't work even after cleaning and reflowing so I resorted to completely remove the ROM, cleaning, resoldering and then it finally worked.

Now it was time to change that battery but I was curious as to what kind of battery was used as I had never seen such a battery socket. Only when I desoldered it I realized it was the top of a 1220 they soldered directly on the board! Laughing

Fitted a 1225 instead and now I'm tempted to finish that game again after almost 30 years Wink

Very strange cartridge. When you say PEEL, is that some kind of PAL chip?

Yes, similar to a GAL as it's reprogrammable.

This cartridge is interesting because of the way they managed to cram everything into such a tiny footprint. Maybe those pirate companies didn't have yet access to SMD components, they were too expensive or they just had stocks of DIP ICs from Famicom pirates.
They cut the legs and soldered them as SMD.

Oh wow, I didn't notice that until you mentioned it. But they would have had to since the other side of the board can't have pins going through it. I wasn't really thinking about that when I first saw the picture. I bet you're right that they probably had those chips and needed to use them up somehow.

Surprised you can even fit full sized DIPs in a GB shell. Surely, they trimmed the legs underneath. Very cool!
