Item description:

I have for sale x4 brand new/ unused Super Wild Card (32M) backup devices. These were originally manufactured by a Japanese company, AdHoc Corp., and therefore the unit interface defaults to Japanese. Good news is that upto ten different languages are supported, so I will provide some printed instructions on how to navigate the Japanese menu's and permanently change the language to English (or any other language).

The units are designed to run on NTSC SNES/ SFC consoles, but *should* work on a modified (region free) UK/ European PAL SNES with a 60Hz switch (operation is not guaranteed).

An AC adapter is included as part of the set, but as it requires a step-down transformer, you may be better off using your own adapter with a rating of 9 to 12v DC (centre negative polarity). A Megadrive 1 or SFC adapter should do the trick (the floppy drive might not run without the extra power).

Condition:

The units are brand new and unused. They each come with x2 floppy discs, one is blank (unformatted), the other is a branded disc with a few picture files in .PCX format to demonstrate the picture viewer function. All the supplied documentation is in Japanese. The outer boxes are in OK condition, but do have some slight wear and the odd mark here and there.

Click the links below for more pictures.

Payment/ Shipping:

Price: Was: GBP£90.00, Then GBP£72.00 *NOW ONLY: GBP£50.00* per unit + one of the following shipping costs*:

UK:GBP£8.15
France/ Germany: GBP£16.50
Ireland: GBP£14.00
USA: GBP£20.00

*All costs are for DHL shipping with insurance and online tracking included. Anywhere else please contact me for a quote. Shipping to the USA is expensive but it's very fast (DHL Time Definite), sometimes taking only two working days.

Payment via PayPal, bank transfer (UK only), and cheque (UK only).

Shocked Shocked Shocked

Amazing! I can't believe we're still finding out about unknown units!
Actually I had never heard of a SWC DX clone before...

Thanks for the pics Oldgamingfart Wink

Why do you assume it's a clone and not some sort of licensed production for a certain region? If it was a clone you'd think they'd atleast change the name.

No problem, I thought I'd gone a bit overboard with the pics, but I guess the more the merrier as they say Cool

Indeed, I believe they're manufactured under license from Front Far East Taiwan, for sale in the domestic Japanese market. The colour scheme of the box matches that of the Super Famicom console. The instruction manual also has a matching serial number sticker inside it (just like all other electronics sold in Japan).

I like the looks of the menu better than my SF6.

By "clone" I mean a derivation from an original design, licensed or not...

The day we'll collect enough information about all the copiers ever built, then only we might be able to design a proper genealogy.
Also let's not forget it happened more than once that engineers left the company with original designs. In a market that was already not considering these products as official ones it's hard to tell which one is really "licensed"

Yes the menu's are really nice on the SWC. You can customize the background, logo's, add music, even the '1994 Front Fareast' text on the main page can be modified.

I know what you mean, a lot of clone's are badly made, often with cheap components and are poorly packaged.
I have to say these one's are flawless, even the mains adapter has a proper rating plate and not some cheap stuck-on sticker. It really looks like they went to a lot of effort to maybe conform to Japanese regulations etc (which I'm assuming are quite strict).

The one way to tell whether or not it was licensed by FFE is to just look at the PCB inside, if it uses a FFE ASIC, it's almost certainly licensed. Another indication is that BIOS appears to be left unchanged though the serial stickers aren't original.

I don't believe it would have to meet any regulations (other than the manufacturer's QC) because copiers to my knowledge were never legitimately sold in any market.

That's interesting. The label mention "made in japan". Do you reckon this company could have bought PCB's from FFE and build the casing locally to trick the customs?

Well, I guess if they built the whole thing for the domestic Japanese market, then they'd be no need to smuggle any parts etc in. Even then I don't think customs would even stop a fully built unit from entering the country.

An interesting thing about these is that they default to Japanese language if the battery back-up runs down (or when they're first powered up). I wonder if this is something they might've altered in the BIOS, assuming the original FFE SWC defaults to English.

I guess it's may be possible to look for some manufacturing clues is if someone buys one of the units and opens it up Very Happy
Also if anyone here can read Japanese (or knows of some decent free OCR software), we can translate some of the instruction manual to look for any licensing details (if any).

Ok it means they at least had a custom BIOS, the same way the GDSF 3 units were sold to Asia with a 3.3C Chinese default bios, and a 3.3E English default bios for the eu/us market.

Thanks for your precious information, some searches on the net didn't return anything specific about this model so far.

Well there's nothing illegal about the parts or building them ;) It's just that since they're sold under the table they don't "need" to be licensed like most consumer electronics.

SWCDXs (and DX2) contain a SEEPROM which stores the user settings; no BIOS hackery is necessary.

I believe the PCB is likely custom though because the floppy placement is different than the FFE DX's.
