I just got a Mega Disk Interceptor 16mb unit. I have some questions:

1. How do you format disks for use with this unit? I have seen PC utilities, but can the unit format it's own disks?

2. I have a cartridge plugged into the slot and as soon as I turn the Genesis on, it goes imediately to the cartridge. Is my Mega Disk Interceptor deffective, or...?

1) If you have an old BIOS you need a utility disk to format disks, backup games and SRAM. If you don't have the utility disk, you can make one using the PC tools.

2) Does it access the drive first? The first thing it looks for is a game on disk or a utility disk.

When it boots up with a cartridge in the slot, it flashes the menu, then boots the cartridge. Is the BIOS upgradeable?

It's not likely damaged then, except for the floppy possibly. The BIOS is upgradeable if you can find a newer BIOS image and can burn a new EPROM. If you mean in system programmable, the only copiers with BIOS on EEPROM or FlashROM are certain N64 copiers.

I do know though that the Super Disk had 2-3 hardware revisions and likely over 10 BIOS revisions and it's possible you can't use just any BIOS on any of the hardware revisions. Unlike the Super Disk though Sane Ting released a Mega Disk II so it's possible there aren't any "good" BIOS for the original Mega Disk, you know that read DOS disks and run all types of images.
