The only SNES clone I've seen out there was based on the 2nd generation SNES, which had slightly cheaper parts overall. I can't comment on the quality though, I didn't get a chance to play it.

The carts aren't blank. They use ROM chips the same as normal carts do. They have just burned them with different data. It's not possible to buy a programmable cart that holds that many games (yet), ...

Nope. I tried the menu files from 2.1-2.3 while running version 2.34 of the software. 2.1 & 2.2 the menu comes up but the games are just scrambled, and with 2.3 it locks up the same as 2.34.
