Hi Guys,

Does anyone know where I can get my SNES/Megadrive fitted with one of these switches? I have absolutely no clue whatsoever when it comes to electronics, and rather messing something up by trying I'd rather pay someone to do it. I did find one site that did it, but the guy's gone travelling or something so has stopped all his services Crying or Very sad

Modding a MegaDrive I is really easy. See http://users.skynet.be/DuNe/Console/stuff.html
I did it with these instructions as well.

Not every SNES can be fitted with a 50/60 Hz switch. Models with the 2 chip PCB can be modded. But as far as I know, there are no instructions available on how to mod a SNES with a 1 chip PCB.
My SNES is the 1 chip model Sad
But I was able to disable the lockout chip Very Happy
There's now way to tell from the outside whether a SNES has a 1 chip or 2 chip PCB. Besides you'll need a special security bit to open the SNES. Usually the older SNESs are the 2 chip PCB models.

Hi would someone explain to me why there is any point in fitting a switch to a modded snes after the lockout chip is done?????
I have read that once you cut the 4 pin on the lockout chip you can use any region cart with your modded snes so why would you need a switch?

1. Lockout Chip on European SNES:

a. You don't need a switch, just do the pin and rewire it on the lockout chip
b. You need a Switch if you want to play Mario RPG, cause that checks for the lockout chip and if disabled it won't run (someting to do with lockout mod protection inside the mario rpg cart.

2. 50/60 herz switch, this is easy, you need a 2,2ohm resistor to do this
(A Page on howto is comming soon with lot's of pictures)
60 is full screen and full speed, the way you need to play the games.

Most games are programmed to run on 60hz, but for europe the just changed the speed to 50hz, what results in a slow play and smaller screen.

Howhever some game (like Toy Story) can only be run in 50hz, cause it is pure programmed for 50hz) (unless you take the us cart.

You can also cut the upper snes case so us carts fit and you don't need an adaptor to play us games (unless you buy a US snes and cut the 2 lockout platic tabs, us snes has no lockout chip and can run any country game if a 50/60hz switch is added)

there's lot more info, but the forum would be to small for this Razz

and happy my page helped you on modding ur megadrive Mozzie Smile

All SNES consoles have a "lockout"/CIC security chip.

Hi guys

I purchased a Super flash kit with the T connector and all that.

Does the T connector Disable the lockout chip on my Pal machine?

I'm confused how things work, do I need a switch to play US roms in full screen on my pal machine?

Cheers

Josh

Are there any games that won't run on an unmodded NTSC SNES that did not have an NTSC release, that is, unique games?

Remember if you're gonna modify it yourself from 50hz up to 60hz, on a megadrive you get some very odd effects from composite and rf outs, namely this:

This effect is due to the crystal chip inside the MD. I tried replacing mine and ended up destroying a very nice Asian Pal MD1 Razz Apparently you don't get colour issues if you use the RGB out.

However there's a company that mods them for £25 here:
http://www.consolepassion.co.uk/modification.htm
I don't know how they get around this issue, perhaps they replace the crystal.

If a crystal was at fault, it would be the CXA1145's (RGB encoder) crystal which generates the color subcarrier frequency, not the main clock. Hope you replaced the right one :D
