I am trying to figure out how to get Final Fantasy III working with my Game Doctor SF7. I have used ucon64 to split the rom into 8mbit pieces and have put them on three floppies. However, the game does not load and shows only a black screen. When I try to play the split rom in ZSNES, it says there is a checksum error and does not play. I've applied the checksum fix using ucon64 and still get the same error. Is there another method to getting this to work? As far as I know, Final Fantasy III does not contain a special chip. I didn't see it listed in the games with special chips on Wikipedia. I could be wrong however. Please let me know of your thoughts.

Did you convert the game to Game Doctor format first? After you convert it to game doctor format with ucon64 (do not just rename the file) you split it with ucon64 right? That should be all you need to do. It's possible the floppy disks or the floppy drive are having errors causing this problem.

Also you could try going in the options to do the Self Test. Do it many times to make sure your DRAM is OK.

Also you are right, FF3 does NOT have any special chip.

Thank you very much. I tried converting it to GD SF3 first and the splitting the ROM after and it now works. I thought that when you split a file in ucon64 they were automatically converted to SF3 format. However, I checked the header information after I split the rom before it was converted and it still said Super Wildcard. It's working very nicely now.

That is a common mistake people make with the GDSF series. You should ALWAYS convert to GD3 format, then split it. So many reported problems are because people don't properly convert their roms. Even copiers that claim to support other formats may not truely support the format the way intended. It's always best to convert to the primary format of a copier. GDSF can get away with loading some non-converted roms but it's really not recommended.
