I know there's difference in the button color and the labeling between the 2 controllers, but is there also an electronic difference? I'm asking because I saw this on the item page of an SFC controller being sold on Ebay.

| The ebay seller just does that to ward off liability. The main difference is the buttons are different colors and Y and X are concave with B and A convex. On the SFC all buttons are convex. On the NES both A and B were concave. |

| What about the power supply? Is the connector that fits into the power connector on an SFC the same as that for the SNES? In other words, if I buy a Japanese SFC, can I use my American SNES power supply with it? |

here's my quick answer: Controllers from all regions are compatible with all regions of consoles.
I usually use a PAL controller on my NTSC deck. NTSC/U controllers had concave and convex buttons designed so the player can determine which button is under his thumb. PAL and NTSC/J controller buttons are all convex.
About the power supply. Check what type of power supply the console requires. As far as I recall, the PAL power supply was not compatible with the NTSC/U deck. I think the NTSC/U deck required DC and the PAL one was designed to convert 220V A/C into something like 9V A/C if I remember right. I could be wrong though. I'd assume the NTSC/J power supply might output A/C as well. Just find a photo of the back of a deck and it should tell you the voltage and polarity it requires as I am unsure.
On a final note. Honestly, having different color buttons on a SNES controller looks somewhat neat but it is very superficial. I found that after owning the official controller with the colored buttons, it lost its novelty real fast. It is only more cool if the controller is mint in sealed package or sealed bag and just for collecting and not for use. The NTSC/U controller is by far sufficient for gaming with.

I mean the actual shape of the power supply connector too. Is the NTSC/J powersupply connector that goes to the machine the same shape as the powersupply connector for the NTSC/U console? |

ya as far as I remember the PAL jack looked weird compared to the NTSC/U system. I don't pull my PAL deck out of the box very often.
This should help. AC 9V just as I thought. NTSC/U is DC 12V as far as I recall.

NTSC controllers don't work on PAL SNES, but the controller PCB can be easily modded to bypass this protection. |

Hi,
I'm french so i know some things about the PAL SNES system.
For answer about the pads, the japan Super Famicom and the US SNES will accept every pads from ervywhere (US / JAP / EUR).
The probleme is for the European model : the pads are region locked !! 
But, if this is your problem, you can solve it easily, just take a look here (in French sorry)

Just link the 4 x "2 same colors" points like on the pictures.
If you want, you can change the LED too
