Hi Tomy,

I remember you mentioned you were making great progress with this. It seems like the thread was deleted somehow.

Also, looks like the pic you posted is still here:

This still going smoothly? I can't wait to see how it turns out. Very Happy

Thanks so much! Hope everyone had a happy New Year!

Hi Doctor Backup,

Yes, I've known about this site for quite a while. It turns out, the hack is a bit more in-depth than this. And unfortunately, Tomy's site doesn't provide a lot of detail on making the hack circuit and where to attach it. Also, the GM disk is pretty difficult to track down.

Based on some Japanese docs I've been translating over the last few months, there are somewhere between 3 and 6 slight variations of FDS hardware, with most models allowing for the two methods shown on Tomy's site. However, I believe it only comes down to two main types of hacks necessary for the models that need it, and one (7201 models) that doesn't need a hack. There might be one of the 6 that doesn't need the hack (a non-7201 model), but I'm still trying to confirm this.

Eventually I plan on documenting every known possible way to back up FDS disks on a site and the hacks needed....something that hasn't really been done before. Unfortunately, an auction forwarding company (Rinkya...don't EVER use them...they will screw you!) withheld many docs that I bought and paid for (I would have had a great resource site up months ago), told me they shipped and they never shipped them. Later, they said they never said they shipped them and that all I have to do is pay for them to be shipped. I refused to pay shipping on something they said shipped 3 months prior and they eventually ceased contact with me and refunded my money for the items and never shipped them to me. Anyway, I got a bit behind in the documentation process...it's starting to pick back up. I'm just having trouble tracking down a new source for them. Rinkya is extremely unreliable and their system is chock full of holes and errors. They also refuse to ever admit error, even when presented with mountains of evidence they screwed up. To all my friends reading this, don't ever use them!

I've been meaning to get a TGD6 for while. Any chance of getting a copy of that Game Master disk from you, DoctorBackup? I've been looking for a copy of it and could supply you with a disk if you don't have a blank. PM me if this is possible.

It's not called "Game Master", it's "Copy Master." I can make a copy of it for you, but I can't gaurantee it to be lossless. The mod shown on Tomy's site works fine on an appropriate drive, I'm using it.

D'oh! Yeah, that's what I meant...Copy Master. It's funny, I thought that was what I wrote. Laughing

Thanks, Kyuusaku! I'll PM you on this. Very much appreciated!

Yours,
Rob

I just want to know if there is any progress since backup solutions for the Famicom are harder and harder to find.

Wish all of us Famicom users luck.

It has since been discovered that Copy Master does not make perfect copies and cannot even make bad copies of some disks.

Come on, spit it out Kyuusaku. Wink Details, lol.

You mentioned it to me earlier, but your explanations are always so much more elegant than mine.

Yes, I second this. Smile Did you ever get further on this, Tomy? Any plans to still go forward with it?

an "FDSpak", from the maker of the PowerPak was mentioned in another thread, but no word at all from the maker of the PowerPak. I wish Tomy could make some sort of FDS backup solution (for copying to and from FDS and a PC).

My understanding is that BunnyBoy cancelled plans for the FDSPak. Fds folks never get any love, heh heh.

Famicom Disk System games are now playable on the PowerPak.

Look at this thread:

http://www.nesdev.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=4351&sid=56cf434f2cb048518a66a650da55eda5

I have them working fine on the powerpak. I also modified my NES to take advantage of the Famicom/FDS's extra sound channels. FDS saving is also playable. So now the PowerPak is THE unit to have for NES/Famicom/FDS! PowerPak also has a great NSF player!

The FDS scene is alive and well, without the need for the actual FDS system.
