Is this possible? More specifically, is it possible to use the Twin Famicom's built in disk drive to load games from FDS disks?

Yes and no. You can use it if you use a separate FDS system, but no you can't use the built in FDS unless you did some serious modification which would involve basically hard wiring the Backup Unit into the Twin Famicom which wouldn't be very fun. The Backup Unit needs to set in the Cartridge Port with the FDS attached to the Backup Device's cart port as I recall. So there is no in between the TwinFamicom and its FDS thats inside without actually modifying the machine severely.

Well perhaps just modding a Twin Famicom to have a port to plug in a separate RAM adapter, so you can plug that into the backup unit to go into the Twin Famicom's cart slot?

What? Inside the TwinFamicom is a RAM adapter built in. The best thing you might be able to do would be to make it so a RAM adapter plugged into the cart slot, which has the backup device plugged in underneath it, able to plug into the built in disk drive. That might work. There aren't a whole lot of wires to control the Drive. It might actually be worth a shot.
