I made a great discovery today. After failing to get my 80gb internal HDD to work even after using Partition Magic to format it with a FAT16 (2gb) partition, I remembered I bought a Compact Flash to IDE adaptor and 2gb Compact Flash card from Fry's the other day (I was originally going to use this setup with my Z64).

I decided to hook the Compact Flash to IDE adaptor to the Disk Dual's IDE cable (the other end of the cable is connected to the 24X CD-ROM drive). I loaded some games onto the 2gb Compact Flash card, put it in the Compact Flash to IDE adaptor, fired up the Disk Dual and Super Wild Card DX2 and it works! It loads games pretty fast. My Compact Flash to IDE adaptor can be set (via jumpers) to be powered by the IDE cable, but it also has a floppy power connector. Just a tip, wait about a minute for the Compact Flash to IDE to fully get power after turning the Disk Dual on before trying to load a game. I noticed after first trying to load from HDD in the SWC DX2 menu it didn't work at first because the power LED on the Compact Flash to IDE adaptor wasn't lit, but it eventually did.

Another tip is if you are going to have more than 30 or 40 files on the compact flash cart (or HDD, or even CD), make separate directories with 30-40 or less files per directory because if you have any more than that, it won't read beyond 30-40 files.

Just my contribution to the group

next I will work on making the Compact Flash to IDE adaptor and Compact Flash more removeable by somehow creating a slot for removing the Compact Flash card

I don't think it's possible to post pictures in this forum, but if you have an alternative, then I would be happy to post pictures of the setup. Trust me, it works.

Not only that but as discovered by Jagasian you can use a multitude of parallel port CF readers which use the supported Kingbyte interface.

Jagasian wrote:

Confirmed to work with the DX2

1. Diskdual: well duh. The largest of the DX2 compatible devices. Big enough to house a 3.5" hard drive and a 5.25" CD-ROM drive at the same time.

2. Datatank KS410 by Antec: this is a general purpose IDE drive enclosure. It comes in multiple revisions and two sizes: 3.5" and 5.25", but the 5.25" version uses an incompatible chipset. The 3.5" Datatank is at least half the size of a Disk Dual, and when laid flat it fits perfectly under a SNES or SFC. I have tested the Datatank with a DX2 and it works perfectly. The last few months of last year had around 4 pop up on Ebay. I suggest using the 3.5" Datatank along with an Addonics CF-IDE adapter. It only takes a few 2GB flash cards to hold every SNES game, and the adapter effectively lets you have a CF card slot hooked up to your SNES.

3. Disklite by Maxbyte: I just got my hands on this one. It is extremely small. Roughly the size of a laptop harddrive. It can only fit a laptop harddrive inside or a compact flash card with adapter. There were two on Ebay. The one I linked looks like the same version as the one I just got, but the other one looks older and in really bad shape... and looks like a different version. Please leave that one for me, as I am trying to collect different Disk Dual compatibles. The newer, cleaner, better shape Disklite is probably a better first buy anyway.

Confirmed to NOT work with the DX2

1. MAP-330 by Mapower: This is an updated version of the Datatank, with the main difference being the use of the second version of the Kingbyte chipset, which is the reason for incompatibility, as the initialization protocol for the new chipset is different by a few bytes from the older DX2 compatilble chipset.

2. KI3020A: This is the second revision of the interface card that is found in the Disk Dual. You can buy this card from Kingbyte for $20 (that was their offer to me), and then buy a bare bones external drive enclosure from somebody else and install the KI3020A inside of it. Basically roll your own Disk Dual. The trick is finding an external enclosure that matches the shape of the KI3020A interface card, as on the backside it has two parallel ports one ontop of the other. Enclosures intended for use with SCSI or parallel interfaces typically have a layout that should work. People use similar enclosures when they roll their own Game Doctor CDROM drive. You could also try rolling your own parallel CF reader by pairing the KI3020A card with a CF-IDE adapter, but you would still need power and an enclosure of some kind. Maybe you could make your own enclosure out of inexpensive materials. I also wanted to play around with making such a device.

3. Kingbyte KCF168P, also sold under the brand "Feiya CFP-3010": It is a parallel port compact flash reader. Compact flash cards can be had at sizes up to 4GB. Though 2GB would be the maximum compatible with the DX2. Also, as stated many times before, CF uses the same logical and electrical interface as an IDE hard drive, so to the Disk Dual, a CF card plugged into this reader would look like a hard drive inside a Disk Dual. Back when it was still manufactured and sold new, the retail price would have been no more than $50 (USD). So it should be inexpensive still today. Parallel CF readers go for no more than $10 (USD) on Ebay. It has technical advantages. It is very small, lightweight, and most likely generates very little heat and uses very little power (like most other CF readers). Furthermore, it lets you hot-swap CF cards, that is remove/insert CF cards without powering everything down. The reason that this is incompatible is indeterminite right now, but it most likely has to do with the following two reasons: it might use the newer chipset and/or it is a master ATAPI device.

Untested, though uses the Kingbyte chipset

1. KanguruDisk w/ Parallel Port Kanguru Cable: I don't even own one of these yet, but Kingbyte themselves said it uses the KI3020A interface and drivers, so it should be compatible. It is still sold new today. However, you will want to buy it without the harddrive installed, as the new ones contain very large harddrives, which are too big to work with the DX2. I will eventually try to get one for myself, sans harddrive, and do the compact flash thing.

2. KI3000: This is the generic part used by the Kanguru disks. If you had more detailed info about the interface at the drive end of the cable, you might be able to use it with your own drive/enclosure.

3. Multiport CD-Jet SL: I haven't tested it, and the English version of their site doesn't work very well for me. If you know German, maybe you could find out if they still sell the CD-Jet SL and for how much. It too uses the Kingbyte interface.

4. unibox: I know nothing about this device other than the fact that it uses the Kingbyte chipset/drivers. If you know any more info on this device, its maker, etc. Post a reply.

5. 3cbridge: I know nothing about this device other than the fact that it uses the Kingbyte chipset/drivers. If you know any more info on this device, its maker, etc. Post a reply.

6. Datatank KS501: Yet another revision of the Datatank. This looks only slightly different than the original Datatank, which has been confirmed to work with the DX2. The main cosmetic difference is an increased number of ventilzation holes, and a button (most likely power) placed on the front of the unit. The original Datatank has a power switch on the back of the unit. This device uses the Kingbyte chipset, but it has yet to be confirmed which version it uses. At only $20 new, it would be great to confirm that this works with the DX2.

CrackLtd: I got my CF2IDE adaptor from Fry's Electronics and according to the package it is a SYBA IDE to CF Adaptor. Looks generic but it sure does work great. You can only connect one external device at a time, like a Disk Dual (with 2 devices since there are 2 IDE channels inside of the case - In my case, my DVD-ROM drive and CF2IDE adaptor), or Zip (100mb only) drive. You can copy from CD to HDD, Floppy to HDD, Zip to HDD (in my case, Compact Flash).

gmlesrpg: I use my DVD-ROM drive with my Disk Dual and it seems pretty much any CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive will work. I use TDK CD media

I see from your first picture the power connector on the CF2IDE adapor is not in use. Doesnt need the CFCard power to operate? (and if so, how many volts?)

you really need to read the entire first post. To quote it directly concerning powering the CF2IDE adaptor:

"My Compact Flash to IDE adaptor can be set (via jumpers) to be powered by the IDE cable, but it also has a floppy power connector."

In short, the IDE cable provides power

I am wondering the same about games not working. I have the GoodSNES set and some games work, some don't. Anyone know how to repair them to work on the SWC DX2?
