|
|
| I have an 8mb Super Magic Drive. Is there any way to upgrade the DRAM to 16mb or higher (I think they went up to 24mb) since the chips on the DRAM board are socketed? |

| Well, mine is 16M. Never heard of a bigger one. Of course there is the SMD+ (or whatever it was called) wich is 24M. This unit is white (instead of black), shaped differently and has the drive internal. |

I have only seen those SMD+ units in pictures, never in person unfortunately. Is the DRAM on the SMD upgradeable since the chips are socketed? |

There's a slight possibility an 8M may be upgradeable to 16M just with a swap of the RAM board, but early 16M models require a unique RAM board with additional logic, you'd have to take it from a Magicom or a Supercom Pro.
There are 24M and 32M FFE SMDs; 24M are very hard to come by, 32M are even harder. |

Can you must upgrade the chips on the DRAM board since they are in sockets? |

| Yep, I have a 32m SMD and a 24m SMD+...I don't believe I've seen an SMD+ larger than 24 ever. SMD+ is a separate beast, different from the FFE SMD. |

Your 32mb SMD, does it have the same kind of DRAM board as say, an 8mb or 16mb SMD? |

No, the sockets only work with 1Mbit DRAMs.

The boards are similar, as in they have the same pinout, but the SMD's motherboard components are what count, with the 32M logic, it can use any revision of RAM board.
These are the logic revisions:
8M
16M version 1 (most common, supports 8M also)
32M (supports 8M / 16M version 1 / 16M version 2 / 24M also) |

I have 32M SMD (upgraded from 24M version) & 32M SMD+ and some 16M SMD.
I think you need to upgrade altera chip from 16M SMD.
I remebered altera chip upgrade in the old price list from national console support.
32M SMD+ ram board is same as super magicom & super wild card.
You can upgrade 24M->32M by adding 2 Dram chips.
Sorry for poor english ! |

| Look up... Most certainly not to 32M, very slight chance it can be upgraded to 16M but you'll need an early RAM board with extra logic chips. |

How can i tell if it has those extra logic chips? perhaps i should post a pic of the motherboard? |

You can tell if it has those extra logic chips because it's the only 16M board with more than just RAM chips...
You don't need to post a pic of the motherboard because all SMDs look the same apart from a wire mod for 24M/32M units. |

eastbayarb:
8MB SMD can upgrade up to 16MB SMD if you have SuperMagicom or SWC ram board.(Even if you use 32MB ram board)
I recommend to upgrade SMD BIOS to latest (4.1A ?)
kyuusaku:
Hi kyuusaku-san !
I also need to know wiring mod for 24M/32M. |
