I just acquired a 24mb Super Magic Drive Plus 24mb unit. What kind of DRAM chips do I need to add to make it 32mb? Does the BIOS need to be upgraded or changed? In another thread a guy mentioned it was possible to do this or just use the memory board from a Super Wild Card or Super Magicom.

also, does this play Sega Master System roms? And i know this is far fetched but if it does play SMS ROMs, perhaps plugging a power base converter into it's cart slot and backing up SMS games is possible?

You need 2x 514400 DRAMs in a 20 pin SOJ package.

You don't need a BIOS upgrade if your unit detects the 24M, 32M works the same as 24M in both hardware AND software.

Like all SMD, it plays SOME Master System ROMs, the SMS mapper is not fully compatible with all games. No you can't backup games with a PBC.

What do you mean by "in a 20 pin SOJ package"? Any idea which games are not compatible with the SMD and why? Is it less compatible than the Tototek SMS-PRO ?

He told you why not all games are compatible. As for the SOJ question, there's a brand new website you should check out here: http://www.google.com/

Yes, seriously, conduct some of your own research, PLEASE. Where do you think all the answers come from? Freebies don't grow on trees. They cost me years of effort learning crap I can't get paid for and a lot of money lost in the name of science. Not to mention that NOBODY is there to answer my questions ;) At some point you gotta think to yourself "wow, I'm lucky to get all these answers from people, but in order to not abuse the system, I should really learn to answer my own questions". Right now you have it easier than ever with Google, Wikipedia, free tutorials, datasheets and technical documents online, not to mention the search function of this very forum.

I am. You rarely post any, though, so I'm usually visiting for naught. Sad

I have done my own research. Pardon me if I don't know the answer to every one of my questions on my own. It's not as simple as just "google it" because you and I both know that whatever info about many of these things is scarce to say the least. I don't abuse the system at all and contrary to belief, I have contributed to this and other forums. For every question I have asked, I have done the research first. I am sure if I read japanese or chinese, I could probably get a lot farther, but I don't. I don't know why you take this so personally - it's an interest, not your job or livelyhood so don't swing at me like I am trying to piss you off.

with that, that will be the last question I ever ask on any forum that kyuusaku is on.

Since when is Chinese (and Japanese??) understanding necessary to learn about copiers? All it takes is common sense and a willingness to learn.

If you open your SMD, and could locate the RAM board, you'd find that it has 6 RAM chips. You could verify that those chips were RAM by Googling their part number. You could find out how to spot part numbers with Google. Anyways, you know you have a 24M unit, you know that there are 6 chips, so hopefully you know each chip is 4M. You see that your board has 2 empty places for more chips. Logically, to get 32M you add 2 more chips.

If you want to know what a SOJ package is, Googling "SOJ package" will bring up what you need to know within the first two pages of results.
Here is a particularly straight forward result: http://www.necel.com/pkg/en/sub_soj.html

Basically you need to find a SIMM stick and check them for 514400 chips (the part number will change by manufacturer so you'll have to crossreference them with Google), that have 20 pins and are in a SOJ package, desolder them, solder them to your RAM board, done.
These URLs may also be helpful:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIMM
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390032655953
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desoldering
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldering

It's not rocket science. I will admit some things aren't intuitive, and if it isn't and it wasn't already answered ad nauseam, that would be a good question to ask, but it feels like we just went over this in the other 32M SMD thread.

And yes the SMD is less compatible than SMS-PRO, that is a good question. How much less compatible, you'd have to ask in a Master System technical forum such as smspower.org. I don't have a list of incompatible games, I don't believe such a thing is published online, that would be something for you to figure out if it interests you, I doubt any one else would like to check hundreds of games just to know.

I did google SOJ package but since my knowledge of these things is limited, I didn't know which site to go to. Believe me, I am a very resourceful guy (I found my 512mb v64jr/dx256/ds1 on craigslist in a different state on craigslist with a google search) but since these units pretty obscure, just a simple google search is often not enough.

Once I get a sega genesis system (my CDX doesn't seem to be adequate for the SMD+), I am going to test each and every SMS ROM on it.

I'd attest to that. Kyuusaku doesn't know Chinese at all, yet back in the day, he was on EmuChina and all sorts of Chinese sites and resources. Sure, it takes more grunt work, but its still quite do-able.
