| Sorry if it wasn't 1337 enough for l0c4lh0st. It's a Mega Disk Interceptor. Total piece of shit, not worth knowing anything about. Can't even read DOS disks. |

| Based upon all the previous glowing endorsements (har), I've bought the one Tomy had for sale, strictly for morbid curiosity and a bit of learning. This oughtta be fun! |

My MDI arrived on Friday, and I had a few minutes last night to play with it. It's not a bad machine overall, despite not having what I'd call an intuitive user interface.
I popped in a Japanese cart, threw a disk in the drive, powered the unit on, pressed "B", and the machine dumped the cart to disk. Pretty simple. Didn't need to format the disk (which was full, incidentally), the MDI overwrote whatever was on the disk.
Next, I converted a Genesis ROM (Undeadline) to .SMD format, used the imc.exe utility to write the ROM to another floppy (which, again, was full), then popped it into the MDI. Worked like a charm.
Finally, I converted a few Master System ROMs (R-Type, Rygar, Quartet) using the ts-ggmd.exe utility, copied to floppy using the imc.exe , popped each separately into the MDI, and they all worked.
Not a bad machine overall, just takes a few extra steps than I'm used to. My only gripes are that it doesn't have SRAM built in (for saving games, although a save cart is available - probably like hen's teeth now), lacks a parallel port, and only fits properly on the first model of the Genesis. Could be made to work on a Genesis 2 by relocating the power and reset switches, but I'm not that ambitious.
I'm gonna try a few Game Gear games on the unit tonight, and see if I can't figure out how to put more than one game on a disk (although I don't think the BIOS supports it... could be wrong). |

Not a bad machine overall? Heh, it's horrible! At least on the later Super Disk BIOS (and probably Mega Disk II) you can load DOS floppies.
Are you sure there isn't SRAM built in? Open it up and see... I'm pretty sure there was (I sold off my Mega Disk a looong time ago.. kinda wish I still had it to laugh at), you must use a save utility disk though to copy the SRAM to a "bank" on the disk or copy a "bank" back to SRAM. To make the disk you either need a DOS tool or maybe the Mega Disk made it for you... can't remember.
Oh and Game Gear games? It's kinda hard to find GG games that don't use the GG's expansions over normal SMS. You could however try porting GG games to SMS, it's not SO hard since generally little has to be rewritten, but not worth the end results IMO. All that TS-GGMD program does is add a Magic Drive header to SMS ROMs... If you use uCON64 you can throw it out ;) |

"Not a bad machine overall" = "Nowhere near as bad as I'd thought"
At least everything's in English!

Not entirely sure - I only fooled with the unit for about an hour so I can't say for certain whether it has SRAM built in. Will know more tonight (or when I have time) once the "experiments" start.

I know there are a few GG games that run in "SMS mode" but I only know that in passing. When I have time I'll do a bit of proper research - tonight however, for the sake of sh*ts and giggles, I'll do the old trial-and-error method.

I suspected as much. Ol' CJ here should RTFM! |
