|
|
Greetings all,
I've just finished creating Kicad files for the elusive MGD2 Cartridge Adapter board and am sharing them here. It uses a PEEL PLD that I intend to reverse engineer and make open source as well.
In my research on this board, a website I found said that there was a software disk required to use this board with the MGD2. I don't have that disk. Is there anyone out there who has a copy of that software and would share it with me?
I am also interested in what the purpose was for the 1x06 connector on the bottom left of the board near the PCE Cartridge Slot if anyone knows.

Thank you again, let me reiterate how precious your work is to our small community.
Here I'm posting the softwares needed to use this interface. There are several versions of these softwares and different MGD2 revisions. At least both my units have a different BIOS.
Here are some brief notes I kept, it's been a long time since I last used it:
| Code: | U4_0.X02 (G1)
IC = Information?
FU = Format Up (1.756M)
FH = Format High (1.44M)
FL = Format Low (720k)
DA = Delete All
CD = Copy Disk
CF = Copy File
MGD2BP02.X02 (G2)
MD = Mega Drive
PC = PC Engine
SF = Super Famicom
GB = Game Boy
GG = Game Gear |
and a pic of my original backup floppy disk as well as another one provided by Kazmat previously
Regarding the CON2, I would imagine it was used during development to test the backup card.
If you indeed manage to reverse engineer this PEEL, that would be neat to use it as a standalone backup interface with some MCU.

| Thank you so much for sharing that with me! It is my pleasure to contribute toward preserving and documenting these devices, and I am very grateful for all of the information on this site as well as what you have shared with me here. I’ll certainly continue to share everything I work on copier related

As I briefly mentioned in Discord, the MGD2 was first using a SRAM interface with a SRAM memory cart up to 8Mbit. You can see most of them on this brochure.
The 2 missing are the first SRAM interfaces that were using just 1 slot on MD and SFC so up to 8M, they were quickly replaced by the dual slots 16M.
The NEC DRAM one was never sold.
As for the PC Link cable 2, there is a thread on this forum with a draft schematic but nothing was ever confirmed so if someone is willing to share.

There are so many devices that would benefit from your expertise, especially if you can reverse engineer those PEEL. On top of my head I thought it would be great to reverse engineer the Smart Card GB/GG interface. The PEEL in it is probably just an address decoder.
xAD posted some pics on his site:

Thanks for sharing the files. I've also dumped my original MGD2 floppy disks.
I've dumped the disks multiple times to ensure everything is ok. Unfortunately the Utility disk got damaged after the second dump. I think my first dump is ok, but I cannot verify it.
btw, I use OmniDisk to dump floppy disks. The FreeDOS version works on Windows 10 64bit with USB floppy disk drives.
