Hey all, my first post here. I hope this is in the relevant section.

this is a longshot, but does anyone know much about these units? Ive got one myself and im finding it next to impossible to upgrade the firmware on the thing. Currently its on 1.41B but the console itself doesent seem to play n64 roms (it loads them into its ram fine but once you turn on the n64 the screen stays blank. i have the cartridge attachment to bypass the n64 security chips). I should note my n64 is a PAL unit.

I believe its got the 256mb ram expansion cards in the bottom, but im unable to verify this as the 1.41B firmware doesent have any of the test menus that the later firmwares have.

Basically, ive tried updating via CD (tried many different file names and none of them seem to work) and ive also got myself a parallel to usb cable to connect the V64 to my computer, but the dos program is a bit tricky to use and if im honest, i cant get my head around it.

If theres anyone who knows what theyre doing with these little units and can perhaps help me upgrade the firmware or get the roms working on it id appreciate the help!

USB to LPT cable won't work. If the copier won't play ROMs, something is certainly wrong, it doesn't take a firmware upgrade to play ROMs.

Hello mate, thanks for the reply.

its certainly odd that the v64 doesent seem to play roms. It loads them into the ram fine, but when i swtich on my n64 it just stays on a black screen. Could it be a problem with the ram, or perhaps the roms? Or even the cartridge adaptor?

Did you verify that the ROMs are in the correct format?

yeah some of the roms are in .v64 format and some are in .bin i believe. the doctor 64 itself recognises the roms and tells me the name of them once theyve been loaded into the ram but when i turn on the n64 i only get a blank screen!

is it true that the n64 attached to the v64 has to be a NTSC console or is that just myth?

It doesn't have to be an NTSC unit, but there were issues with the connectors on the bottom of the PAL units, IIRC. Is the connector between the N64 and V64 white or black?

The white connector was thinner and very unreliable. Bung later released a thicker black version which is what you'll want. There are ways to modify the white connector or your N64 though.

If you paid less than that for the V64 you shouldn't have anything to complain about for buying the connector. I wish I could get a working V64 for less than 35$. But it seems a pretty nice sounding N64 flash cartridge is on the way.

What I did back when I had the white connector and the black wasn't yet released was to coat each of the pins on the N64 side of the connector with solder to make them thicker. This helped a lot.

If you had a bad flash on yours, the unit wouldn't even boot up.

i might give the solder trick a go, not like theres a great deal to loose if its already faulty!
